Studio Notes: Friday, May 30, 2025

A laid-back look at what I have been building, reading, and enjoying lately.

Welcome to the first edition of Studio Notes!
This is something new I’m trying—a casual check-in from my desk to yours. Every now and then, I’ll share quick updates on what I’ve been working on, what’s been inspiring me, and a few things I think are worth checking out. It’s not polished or professional—just honest notes from behind the scenes.

WHAT I HAVE BEEN MAKING

This week I finished up a logo project for Refuge Church Northport, a new church being planted in Northport, Alabama.

If you’d like to see the full project, CLICK HERE. If you need a new logo for your church, youth group, ministry, or organization, you can use this link GET A QUOTE. I’d love to work with you.

I also recently designed this shirt for AL Youth Camp 2025.

For quality apparel printing I recommend a local shop Steel City Screen Print. Check them out here

WHAT I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO

Lately, I’ve been playing old Car Talk episodes and jamming to some Nate Parrish music.

WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING

I recently discovered the Star Wars: Republic Commando book series, which is really good—even if you’re not a Star Wars fan. It tells the story of battling the Empire from the perspective of Clone Army Commandos. BUY IT HERE

If you want a great art-related read, I recommend Art and Faith: A Theology of Making by Makoto Fujimura. This book explores the spiritual connection between art and God, showing how we were created to create and how art is a form of worship.

“Conceived over thirty years of painting and creating in his studio, this book is Makoto Fujimura’s broad and deep exploration of creativity and the spiritual aspects of ‘making.’ What he does in the studio is theological work as much as it is aesthetic work. In between pouring precious, pulverized minerals onto handmade paper to create the prismatic, refractive surfaces of his art, he comes into the quiet space in the studio in a discipline of awareness, waiting, prayer, and praise.

Ranging from the Bible to T. S. Eliot, Mark Rothko, and Japanese Kintsugi technique, he shows how, unless we are making something, we cannot know the depth of God’s being and God’s grace permeating our lives. This poignant and beautiful book offers the perspective of, in Christian Wiman’s words, an ‘accidental theologian,’ one who comes to spiritual questions always through the prism of art.”

WHAT I HAVE BEEN WATCHING

I haven’t had a lot of time for watching lately, but the Minecraft movie looks good, and I’ve heard great things about the new Lilo and Stitch movie from my kids. For comfort viewing, I love old shows like The Andy Griffith ShowMASH*, I Love LucyThe Beverly Hillbillies, and my all-time favorite, Hogan’s Heroes.

THAT’S A WRAP

Hope you found something here that inspired you—or at least gave you a few fun things to read, watch, or listen to.

Thanks for stopping by! I’ll be back with more Studio Notes from time to time.
